Reading ~

books I’ve read and remembered

Doomed!

There is a doom upon you, but of what sort I know not.

Completely unrelated: When my daughter was younger and I tried to share my copious experience in an effort to stop her from making the same butthead mistakes I did, she didn’t exactly cover her ears. What she did, instead, was declaim loudly, “Doomed! I’m doomed!”

I’m going to steal this line

“Silence, traitor! Death is your doom now.”

And this one:

“I have a doom laid on me, a doom that concerns us all, and I seek your help.”

LibraryThing updated

Only 25 books so far this year. I’ve been checking a lot of books out of the library and returning them unread — too busy to read, and then too tired to read anything that requires concentration.

Looking at my tags by year, I can see that a lot of the books I read in earlier years are missing. I think I’ll try to add them as I remember them. Getting the years right will be almost impossible. Heh heh. “You couldn’t have read that book in 2002! It came out in 2005!”

Vocabulary check: noisome

From an anonymous book, chapter 1, paragraph 3:

I spread my arms wide and leaned into the oncoming mass, blowing a whistle that was more noisome than effective.

(The protag is a police officer assigned to riot control.)

Heh heh. Let’s try that again:

I spread my arms wide and leaned into the oncoming mass, blowing a whistle that was more malodorous than effective.

Per Merriam-Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary:
noisome
1 : NOXIOUS, HARMFUL
2 a : offensive to the senses and especially to the sense of smell noisome garbage b : highly obnoxious or objectionable noisome habits
synonyms see MALODOROUS
